The word 'chikan' literally means embroidery and Chikankari incorporates around 36 different stitching techniques that can be combined with embellishments like mukaish, mirrors etc. It got its GI status in 2008.
Historically, it has been present since 3rd Century AD (reign of Chandragupta Maurya). The Persian influence on the craft is evident in its paisley and floral motifs.
